Zoo Wants Chimp Commercials Pulled from Super Bowl

1
Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo says there’s nothing funny about a commercial featuring suit-and-tie wearing chimpanzees scheduled to air Sunday during the Super Bowl.

Steven Ross, assistant director of the zoo’s Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes, says CareerBuilder.com’s commercial showing chimps outsmarting a human co-worker actually poses a risk to chimpanzees because people lose sight of the fact they’re an endangered species and become less likely to help save them.

Toilet texting on the rise

0
Toilet TextingWith today’s smartphones, more people are taking their work and personal lives wherever they go — even to the toilet.

A new study of mobile phone habits shows 75 percent of people have texted, emailed, used apps or surfed the web while nature calls.

More than 90 percent of people between 28 and 35 will return a call or text while sitting on the toilet.

One in five men joined a conference call while sitting on the toilet, despite the possibility of people on the other end hearing noises or accidentally hitting the FaceTime video conferencing button.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner Will Quit if Obama gets re-elected

0

Tim Geithner, one of President Barack Obama’s closest economic advisers, has no intention on staying on as Treasury secretary if Obama wins a second term.

Geithner, who was one of the chief architects of the government’s response to the financial crisis, told Bloomberg Television he’s “pretty confident” Obama won’t ask him to stay on.

“I’m confident he’ll be president. But I’m also confident he’s going to have the privilege of having another secretary of the Treasury,” Geithner said.

The comments, which were confirmed by the Treasury Department, mean a second four-year term in the White House would be led by an entirely different economics team than the one Obama started with. Other high-profile advisers like Larry Summers and Christine Romer have already left the White House.

FACT CHECK: Obama pushes plans that flopped before

0
Obama State of the UnionIt was a wish list, not a to-do list.

President Barack Obama laid out an array of plans in his State of the Union speech as if his hands weren’t so tied by political realities. There can be little more than wishful thinking behind his call to end oil industry subsidies — something he could not get through a Democratic Congress, much less today’s divided Congress, much less in this election year.

And there was more recycling, in an even more forbidding climate than when the ideas were new: He pushed for an immigration overhaul that he couldn’t get past Democrats, permanent college tuition tax credits that he asked for a year ago, and familiar discouragements for companies that move overseas.

A look at Obama’s rhetoric Tuesday night and how it fits with the facts and political circumstances: Read More @ Washington Times

Fried food heart risk ‘a myth’

0
Fried FoodIt is a “myth” that regularly eating fried foods causes heart attacks, researchers have found, as long as you use olive oil or sunflower oil.

They say there is mounting research that it is the type of oil used, and whether or not it has been used before, that really matters.

The latest study, published in the British Medical Journal, found no association between the frequency of fried food consumption in Spain – where olive and sunflower oils are mostly used – and the incidence of serious heart disease.

Why scratching your ankle is as good as sex

0
AN itchy ankle is the most pleasurable body part to relieve by scratching, an international scientific study has found.

Volunteers were made to itch by their skin being rubbed with cowhage, a plant so irritating to us that it is known in parts of Africa as the mad bean.

The research found that scratching an itch on the ankle, when compared with an itch on the forearm or a hard-to-reach itch on the back, was the most pleasant.

Here FRANCIS McGLONE – professor of cognitive neuroscience at Liverpool John Moores University and a member of the International Forum For The Study Of The Itch – explains why the research is so important.
